Saudi Oil Tanker Attacks Escalate Tensions in Strait of Hormuz
Two supertankers carrying Saudi oil were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to shipping intelligence and tracking firms Marisks and Kpler. The attacks occurred within minutes of each other while the tankers were transiting outbound through the strait.
The tankers, Saudi Arabian-flagged Sidr and Liberian-flagged VLCC Senegal Prosperity, each loaded 2 million barrels of Saudi crude at the Juaymah terminal last week. All crew members on board were reported safe after the attacks.
This incident marks a further escalation in the threat environment within the Omani corridor. The Strait of Hormuz has been a point of contention between Iran and the US, with blockades having sharply curbed energy exports from the Gulf.
