Saudi Oil Tanker Halted in Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
The Strait of Hormuz has been at the center of tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. According to Fars news agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, a Saudi oil tanker named Cedar stopped while passing through the southern corridor of the strait on August 31, 2026.
Fars reported that the tanker, which can carry up to two million barrels of oil, suddenly switched on its Automatic Identification System (AIS) while transiting the strait. This incident came after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said it had received a report involving a tanker and military forces, but Fars did not confirm if the UKMTO report involved the same vessel.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil shipments, with many countries relying on its safe passage. Any disruptions to this route can have significant economic implications.
