Saudi Oil Tankers Divert Around Africa Due to Houthi Rebel Threats
Six Saudi oil tankers are diverting from the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint due to Houthi rebel threats, opting for a rare Africa journey instead.
The vessels, owned by national shipping company Bahri, are signaling either Gibraltar or ports in South Africa. The unusual route will add at least two weeks to their journey.
The move comes as Saudi Arabia explores alternative export routes due to the increased threat of attacks from Houthi rebels and Iran-backed militants.
