Saudi Pipeline Shutdown Threatens Global Oil Supplies Amid Expansive Explosions in Yanbu

Explosions rocked the Saudi port city of Yanbu on Sunday, causing widespread damage and threatening to disrupt global oil supplies. The blasts, which were reportedly heard across wide areas, sent smoke rising from the site of the incident, although details about casualties or damage are still unclear.

Saudi authorities have yet to release an official statement on the explosions, but local reports suggest that they may be connected to a pipeline shutdown caused by drone attacks on Friday. The pipeline, which had been used as a strategic alternative route due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, was forced offline after the attacks.

Industry sources warn that Saudi Arabia's available export stocks could be exhausted within days if the pipeline is not restored, potentially removing up to 4% of global oil supply from the market. Yanbu, which is one of Saudi Arabia's key oil export hubs, has enough stored crude to sustain exports for only five to seven days.

The shutdown comes at a critical time for global energy markets, which are already facing severe supply shortages that have pushed fuel prices higher and increased economic pressure worldwide. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that Saudi oil supply had fallen to its lowest level in over three decades due to reduced flows through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
