Saudi Pipeline Shutdown Threatens Up to 4% Global Oil Supply Loss
Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline has been shut down following drone attacks on September 11, 2026. The pipeline, which spans 1,200 km (745 miles), had a maximum design capacity of 7 million barrels per day (b/d) but was operating at only 2 million b/d in August due to increased Houthi attacks in the Bab El-Mandeb region.
The drones were launched from Iraq, according to Saudi officials, who have not disclosed the extent of any injuries or damage. Satellite imagery released on September 13 showed substantial damage to a pumping station along the pipeline.
Saudi oil buyers and traders told Reuters that stocks at Red Sea terminals could support exports for 5-7 days if the pipeline remains out of service. A prolonged shutdown could remove as much as 4% of global oil supply, according to market estimates.
