Saudi Rerouting and Russian Refinery Shutdown Shake Global Oil Markets
Saudi Arabia is rerouting oil exports through the Persian Gulf and Egypt's Sidi Kerir terminal, following Houthi threats to Red Sea shipments. According to Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia's overall oil exports averaged 3.2 million barrels per day (mbd) in the first 23 days of August, below pre-war levels and a wartime low of 3.65 mbd in May.
The move highlights continued logistical rerouting as producers adapt to supply disruptions. Meanwhile, Russia's fourth-largest refinery, NORSI, suspended crude processing following a Ukrainian drone attack, adding another layer of risk to the already constrained refined-product market.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent detailed 'Operation Economic Outcast,' extending scrutiny across digital assets, technology, precious metals, aviation, and maritime activities. The Treasury stopped short of sanctioning Chinese banks or refineries, contrary to market expectations.
