Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan Defence Pact Seeks to Counter Regional Aggression

The Middle East has been plagued by conflict for nearly three years since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. In response to this turmoil, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed a joint defence agreement in Mecca on August 7, 2026.

The pact, known as the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, is intended to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression. An armed attack against any of the three countries would be regarded as an attack on all, according to a joint statement from the nations.

This agreement comes amidst growing concerns over the increasingly aggressive military stances of both Israel and revolutionary Shi'ite Iran. The conflict has already taken a severe toll on Saudi Arabia, imperiling its oil exports and development plans, and raising questions about the reliability of its longstanding US security umbrella.

The pact builds on longstanding bilateral military ties among the three countries. Pakistan has provided training and technical assistance to Saudi forces for decades, while Turkey and Pakistan have exchanged warships and training aircraft.
