Saudi-US Nuclear Deal Sparks Fears of Arms Race and Conflicts of Interest

The signing of a nuclear agreement between Saudi Arabia and the US has raised several concerns. Energy Secretary Chris Wright unexpectedly signed a 30-year deal potentially worth tens of billions to American industry, without consulting President Donald Trump or including key provisions previously agreed upon by former presidents Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan.

One condition was normalization with Israel, while another was Saudi Arabia's joining the Abraham Accords. However, the agreement does not include these conditions, which a White House spokesperson stated would render the deal invalid.

The Saudis have rejected both conditions, insisting that nothing can happen until the Palestinians achieve statehood. The deal also grants Saudi Arabia unprecedented authority to enrich uranium and reprocess spent nuclear fuel in their own country.

This has sparked fears of an arms race in the region and raised concerns about the potential diversion of enriched uranium for military purposes. With its enormous oil and natural gas reserves, some question whether Saudi Arabia truly needs a nuclear power program.

The deal is also being scrutinized due to potential conflicts of interest involving Trump's family members, particularly Jared Kushner, who has ties to the kingdom through his private investment company.
