Saudi-US Strikes Target Iranian-Linked Militia in Iraq
Saudi Arabia and US forces have launched strikes against Iranian-aligned militia sites in eastern Iraq in response to drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. The operation marks a significant escalation, with Riyadh moving from air defense to offensive operations alongside US Central Command.
The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), a salaried arm of the Iraqi state, was targeted by Saudi and US aircraft on July 29. Major General Turki al-Malki, Defense Ministry spokesman, stated that the strikes were carried out under the right of self-defense recognized in Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The PMF reported eight fatalities and four wounded members, while Central Command estimated at least 10 casualties. US forces have previously faced over 600 attacks from Iran-aligned militias between February and April, with none succeeding against US personnel or facilities.
