Researchers at South Dakota State University have discovered an innovative way to help cereal crops obtain the nitrogen they need, inspired by nature. The team has developed tiny 'nitrogen factories' using hydrogel beads, which can naturally supply plants with this essential nutrient.
Nitrogen is a crucial component for life on Earth and plays a key role in plant growth. The team at South Dakota State University took inspiration from an ancient Mexican corn variety and root nodules found on soybeans. By studying how this specific corn variety grows in nitrogen-deficient soils, they identified a promising solution in hydrogel beads that can act as tiny 'factories' for naturally supplying plants with nitrogen.
