SDSU Extension Hosts 37th Annual Draper Winter Wheat Meeting
The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is hosting its annual Draper Winter Wheat meeting next Thursday, August 27, 2026. The event, which marks its 37th year, will take place at the City of Draper Auditorium and feature a free meal before the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
The meeting is open to producers and community members, with no registration required. SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist Clarence Winter noted that winter wheat presents unique challenges for growers due to its growth across all four seasons, which can lead to variable yields in drought conditions like this year's.
This year's speakers will address the impact of drought on wheat production, including Sunish Sehgal, SDSU professor and lead winter wheat breeder, who will present findings from the 2026 winter wheat variety trials. Matthew Elliott will discuss current market conditions, price trends, and marketing considerations for producers preparing to sell their 2026 crop.
Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension State Climatologist, will provide a climate update and outlook for South Dakota, as well as insights on weather-related impacts to wheat production. The event is designed to help growers learn from this year's challenges and prepare for the future.
