Senate Farm Bill Includes Year-Round E15 Approval Amid Energy Independence Hopes

The US Senate's inclusion of year-round E15 approval in its version of the farm bill has raised hopes for increased ethanol blend sales. Ethanol, a fuel additive made from corn, is currently available as a lower E10 blend year-round. Supporters claim that allowing E15 sales would strengthen the farm economy and make the country more energy independent.

However, opponents point to research showing that higher blends could worsen summer smog while encouraging the conversion of grasslands for corn farming. Some lawmakers from oil-producing states also oppose the expansion.

Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, who voted in favor of both the House and Senate versions, expressed confidence that a compromise would be reached: 'I don't think the House is going to love this version compared to what we passed, but at some point we'll figure out a way to get to yes, collectively.'

Johnson emphasized the importance of year-round E15 sales for American energy dominance. With rising gas prices and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Johnson believes that reducing reliance on liquid fuels is crucial.
