Senegal Unlocks Oil and Gas Blocks for Investors Amid West African Boom
Senegal is opening up its oil and gas resources to local and foreign investors. The country's Energy and Petroleum Minister, El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf, announced that 109 out of 113 oil and gas blocks will be made available for investment. Only four of the blocks are currently under contract.
The move follows a series of offshore discoveries over the past decade, which have established Senegal as a significant player in the petroleum industry in West Africa. The country's first oil project began production in 2024, and liquefied natural gas exports started a year later from a joint project with Mauritania.
Woodside Energy, an Australian-based company, achieved first oil at the Sangomar oil project in June 2024. BP also successfully loaded the first LNG cargo for export from Phase 1 of its Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
