Senegal Unveils Ambitious Energy Expansion Plans

Senegal's energy sector is set for expansion as the government plans to offer 109 oil and gas blocks to local and foreign investors. This move comes after several offshore discoveries in the past decade that have jump-started the country's petroleum industry.

The remaining 109 out of 113 oil and gas blocks are currently under contract, with only four blocks under development. The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf, stated that the president's plan is to create local leaders in the energy sector.

Senegal has made significant progress in its petroleum industry, with the start-up of its inaugural oil project in 2024 propelling economic growth to a record high. The Sangomar Field Development Phase 1, developed by Woodside Energy, features a stand-alone floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility with a nameplate capacity of 100,000 barrels per day.

Following the success of the Sangomar project, BP loaded the first LNG cargo for export from Phase 1 of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project located offshore Mauritania and Senegal. The GTA project is projected to produce around 2.3 million tons of LNG annually over more than two decades.
