Sensex Tumbles Amid Oil Price Surge and MSCI Reshuffle
The Indian stock market experienced a downturn on Monday as rising oil prices and escalating Middle East tensions weighed on investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex fell by approximately 0.5% to reach 76,898.
Brent crude oil prices climbed towards $90 per barrel following the latest US-Iran escalation, causing concerns for India's oil imports. This development added to the market's already cautious tone ahead of the MSCI reshuffle on September 1.
The MSCI reshuffle will see Laurus Labs, Lenskart, Adani Energy Solutions, and Groww joining the index, while Balkrishna Industries, SBI Cards, and Astral will be removed. Reliance Industries' weight in the Sensex is expected to decrease, whereas Adani Enterprises' weight will increase.
The IT sector was among the biggest decliners, with Infosys, Persistent Systems, and Mastek falling by 2.2-3%. Other laggards included Reliance (-1.2%), Tempsens Instruments (-3.4%), and Netweb (-2.7%).
HDFC Bank bucked the trend, gaining approximately 1.9% after its CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan announced he would not seek a third term in October. Analysts at Bernstein viewed this change positively, citing an opportunity for HDFC to reset its strategy.
