Serbia Courts US Gas Amid EU Pressure for Diversified Energy
Serbia has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on energy infrastructure and regional energy security with the United States, as part of their first strategic dialogue.
The memorandum covers issues related to energy infrastructure and regional energy security, which should be seen in the context of the broader European trend of moving away from Russian energy imports, according to Dr. Nevena Šekarić Stojanović, a research fellow at the Centre for Euro-Atlantic Studies.
Serbia has agreed to construct gas interconnectors and receive approximately 300 million cubic meters of American natural gas per year under this agreement, which opens up opportunities for the purchase of American liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The sale of the majority stake in the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) to Hungary's MOL Group is nearing its final phase after months of negotiations following US sanctions on NIS due to its Russian ownership.
