Serbia's Sunflower Price Plummets, Leaving Farmers in the Red

Serbia's sunflower crop has seen its purchase price drop to 40 dinars per kilogram, down from last year's 55-60 dinars. This represents a decrease of between 27 and 33 percent.

Farmers are concerned that this low price will not cover their production costs, which have risen by 20-30 percent. The drought and high temperatures that affected the crop also led to a smaller harvest, with yields ranging from 900 kilograms to two tons per hectare.

Dusan Tornjanski, a farmer from Banat, expressed his frustration at the low price, saying 'Buyers paid us 20 dinars per kilogram for wheat this year, and corn will probably be cheap too, even though it has already been dry for three or four years and yields are down.' He expects that if the current price stands, farmers may have to organize a protest.
