Shell Sells Rhode Island Plant, Strengthens Mid-Atlantic Presence
Shell has announced two separate transactions involving its US energy trading and supply subsidiary. The company sold its stake in a natural gas-fired power plant in Rhode Island to Constellation Energy on September 10, 2026.
The same day, Shell acquired a production site in Pennsylvania, further solidifying its presence in the Mid-Atlantic region managed by PJM Interconnection.
Both transactions are expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. The Rhode Island plant was previously operated under a tolling agreement before being sold to Constellation Energy.
Andrew Smith, Shell's President of Trading and Supply, described the deal as the accelerated realization of a disposal gain, part of the group's portfolio management activity backed by physical assets.
