Silver Breaks Through $50 An Ounce After Nearly 45 Years

Silver's price broke through $50 an ounce in January 2026 after nearly 45 years of struggling to reach that level. However, this milestone is not as significant as it seems because even at its peak near $121.62, silver had not yet reclaimed its inflation-adjusted record from 1980.

The price of silver surged in the late 1970s and early 1980s due in part to attempts by Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt to corner a third of the world's deliverable silver supply. Their efforts pushed prices up from around $7.69 to $49.45 in a single year, but this bubble burst on March 27, 1980.

Fast forward to April 2011, when silver climbed from around $17 to $49.47 before reversing course again. The metal's price has been struggling to break through the $50 barrier for decades, with two notable attempts in 1980 and 2011 resulting in prices peaking at nearly identical nominal levels.

So what finally broke the $50 ceiling in January 2026? China tightened export controls on refined silver that month, which combined with a fresh wave of monetary-protection buying, drove the price up to its intraday high near $121.62.
