Silver Defies Institutional Selloff with 4.9% Price Surge
Professional investors are dumping silver exchange-traded funds at an alarming rate, but that hasn't stopped the metal from climbing. On August 5, 2026, spot silver jumped 4.9 percent to $62.44 per ounce, a significant increase that marked a six-week high and broke through the psychologically important $60 threshold.
The disconnect between institutional flows and price action is stark, with roughly 5.1 million ounces exiting Silver ETFs in a single trading day alone. Since the start of 2026, net redemptions have accumulated to nearly 29 million ounces, leading market observers to attribute the selling to profit-taking by large holders following January's spectacular run.
Retail investors, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Physical demand for coins and bars has climbed roughly 18 percent, according to industry data, and that buying is generating upward pressure that has overwhelmed the ETF exits.
