Silver Market Deficits Meet Exploding Industrial Demand Amid Volatility
The silver market has experienced significant volatility in recent times, but The Silver Institute's President and CEO Michael DiRienzo asserts that investors should look beyond the price fluctuations to understand the underlying strength of the market. According to DiRienzo, the silver market has established higher floors due to its increasing value for both industrial utility and investment potential.
In 2026, silver surged to $121 an ounce on January 29 before falling sharply alongside gold. By February, the price had dropped to around $65 per ounce. DiRienzo attributed this decline to the late-February outbreak of war in Iran, which put additional pressure on precious metals.
However, despite the market's volatility, DiRienzo remains optimistic about silver's prospects. He notes that just two years ago, predicting an average 2026 silver price above $72 to $75 per ounce would have seemed extraordinary, but the market has indeed reached this neighborhood this year.
Industrial demand is a significant driver of the silver market, with The Silver Institute expecting a small decline in industrial demand this year due to reduced silver consumption in photovoltaics. Nevertheless, DiRienzo emphasizes that manufacturers are reluctant to abandon silver entirely due to its high electrical conductivity and the complexities involved in replacing it.
