Silver Market Torn Between Profits and Fed Policy Expectations
The silver market is caught between two opposing forces: record-breaking profits from mining companies and a spot price that's struggling to hold its ground.
On one hand, major producers like First Majestic Silver and Sotkamo Silver have reported impressive quarterly results, with revenue surging by 53% and 151%, respectively. These companies are flush with cash, raising dividends and repurchasing shares.
However, the spot price of silver has been buffeted by Federal Reserve policy expectations and dollar swings, making it difficult to discern a clear direction for the market. The recent interest rate decision was far from unanimous, with three committee members dissenting, and markets have priced in a 63% probability of another rate hike in September.
The technical picture is also mixed, with the silver futures contract hovering near a pivotal juncture. Analysts are watching key levels, including the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level of $57.62, which could determine the market's direction in the near term.
