Silver Prices Rally on Weaker Inflation, Fed Rate Expectations Shift
The silver market has been experiencing a two-speed market, with prices fluctuating due to various factors. Despite closing the week at $64.61, down 1.4 percent on the day, silver's weekly gain was 1.3 percent, and its advance over the past month was 11 percent.
The catalyst for this shift was the latest inflation data, which showed core consumer prices rose 0.2 percent month-on-month in July, with an annual increase of 2.5 percent, both readings coming in below expectations.
This has dramatically reshaped the outlook for the Federal Reserve's September meeting, with a 69.4 percent probability that the central bank holds rates steady, and just 30.6 percent anticipating a 25-basis-point hike.
A softer inflation typically translates into a weaker dollar, which was reflected in Friday's currency markets, where the euro firmed against the greenback, an environment that historically favors precious metals.
