Silver Prices Stabilize Amid Hawkish Fed, Dollar Strength
The recent Federal Reserve decision to keep interest rates unchanged has sparked debate over the future of silver prices. The Fed's 9-3 vote showed a hawkish bias, with three members preferring a quarter-point increase. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan were among those who voted for a rate hike.
Despite the unchanged rate, silver prices have retreated somewhat as investors weigh the policy path ahead. The market is smaller and more volatile than gold, making it sensitive to borrowing costs and industrial demand. A stronger dollar would also put pressure on silver, which relies heavily on physical investment and industrial applications.
The Silver Institute expects global industrial fabrication to decline 2% this year to about 650 million ounces, a four-year low. This weakness is expected in the solar industry, where manufacturers are reducing their use of silver and substituting other materials instead.
