Silver Prices Surge Amid Growing Demand for AI and Data Centers
Silver prices have regained their upward trend after falling to $55.5 per ounce in mid-July, according to recent market developments. The metal's value began increasing in early August, reaching $68.3/oz on Aug. 25. This growth coincided with a broader rally in precious metals, including gold, which rose from around $4,000/oz in late July to over $4,600/oz by the end of August.
The uptick in silver prices is attributed to growing demand from sectors beyond photovoltaics, such as artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, electric vehicles, and broader electrification trends. Philip Newman, Managing Director of Metals Focus, remains positive on gold and silver prices for both late 2026 and into 2027, expecting the US Fed not to raise interest rates this year.
Silver Institute president Michael DiRienzo expects a nearly 50 million oz structural deficit in the market this year. He notes that AI, data centers, electric vehicles, and electrification are driving demand, with silver used in electrical and electronic applications such as contacts, connectors, switches, and circuit boards.
