Silver Prices Surge as Data Center Demand Boosts Metal
Silver prices have rebounded sharply in August, rising by over 8% in just over a week to around $64 an ounce. This comes after a sell-off in recent months, with silver falling to around $56 an ounce from its January peak of $115.
The rebound is attributed to growing demand for the metal in data centers, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) facilities. Cloud computing firms have invested heavily in these centers, which require large amounts of silver due to its high conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Data center spending is expected to reach a staggering $7 trillion by 2030, according to McKinsey estimates. Major hyperscalers like Meta Platforms, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft are continuing to invest in data centers despite recent reservations among investors.
As a result, the stocks of silver producers such as First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG), Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE: WPM), and Pan American Silver (NYSE: PAAS) have surged in August. The iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV) has also risen by 7% over the past month, making it a viable option for investors looking to invest directly in physical silver.
