Silver Purity: A Guide to Fine Silver, Sterling Silver, and Beyond
Silver purity is typically expressed in fineness, which indicates the percentage of pure silver in an alloy. The most common grades are fine silver (99.9% pure), sterling silver (92.5% pure), Britannia silver (95.8% pure), and coin silver (90% pure). Fine silver contains 99.9% silver content with minimal impurities, while sterling silver is the most common grade used in jewellery and household items.
The daily silver rate you see online is just a benchmark, and the final showroom price will always be higher due to making charges and GST. For studded silver jewellery, the weight of embedded stones is excluded when calculating the net silver weight for pricing. Verifying authenticity by checking the BIS logo and purity grade is crucial.
Investors can consider digital silver or silver ETFs as alternatives to physical storage or making charges. Digital silver allows investors to buy and hold silver digitally through online platforms, but such instruments are not regulated by SEBI. Silver ETFs track domestic silver prices and do not require physical storage.
