Silver Rally at Crossroads as Rate Hopes Collide with Gulf Diplomacy
Silver's recent rally faces its first major test as conflicting forces push the metal to new heights. Despite reaching $63.58 per ounce, the white metal is caught between the US labor market and Gulf diplomacy.
The softening of the US labor market has fueled hopes that the Federal Reserve may be nearing the end of its tightening cycle. Private payrolls expanded by just 44,000 jobs in July, a figure well short of economists' expectations. This has led to futures markets pricing only one more rate hike for the remainder of the year, down from two previously.
The shift in rate hike expectations is crucial for silver as it makes the metal a more attractive store of value. Lower oil prices are also reinforcing this dynamic, with crude prices shedding roughly 10 percent this week on the prospect of restored supply.
