Silver Soars on Hormuz Tensions, But Longer-Term Trend Remains Uncertain
A sudden escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz sent silver prices soaring on Tuesday, but this move sits awkwardly against a longer-term picture that is anything but straightforward.
Silver has now advanced 55.31 percent over the past twelve months, yet the four-week trend tells a different story, with the metal down 5.32 percent on a monthly basis.
The immediate catalyst for Tuesday's pop was twofold: an unidentified projectile struck a cargo vessel in the strait, stoking fears of supply disruptions and driving risk premiums across commodities, while the US dollar slid to its lowest level since mid-June, making dollar-denominated metals cheaper for overseas buyers.
The weaker dollar also shifted silver's standing relative to gold, with the gold-silver ratio falling below 69 as silver surged 2.5 percent toward $59 per ounce.
