Silver Surges Past Gold and Equities with August Rally
The silver price experienced a remarkable surge in August, rising by over 15% to surpass gold and major equity benchmarks. According to Deutsche Bank's selected cross-asset performance table, silver outperformed its peers with a gain of 15.6%, while gold gained only 9.7%. The KOSPI advanced around 9% and the S&P 500 returned 2.7%.
The increase in silver prices can be attributed to concerns about financial repression following the US Treasury's announcement of increased purchases of longer-dated government debt. This move led to a temporary pullback in longer-dated US yields, but renewed concerns about financial repression helped lift gold prices by 9.7% in August, while silver gained 15.6%. Some agricultural commodities also performed well, with sugar up 21.5%, wheat gaining 18.3%, and corn rising 16.8%.
The price of silver continued to fluctuate throughout the month, reaching a monthly high above $71 before retreating, but has since rebounded above $66. The next moves for silver will depend on Federal Reserve rate expectations, the US Dollar, and changes in long-dated Treasury yields. Investor demand, precious-metals flows, and market responses to upcoming US employment and inflation data will also influence whether the August outperformance can be sustained.
