Silver's Price Sensitive to Shifts in Industrial Demand and Monetary Policy
Silver's price has been navigating an unusual convergence of forces, with a structural shift in its industrial base against short-term swings of monetary policy. The metal slipped 0.7 percent on Tuesday to $66.38 per ounce but masked a market wrestling with two different narratives.
The most consequential development for silver's long-term outlook is the industry's technological pivot away from photovoltaics, which had been a cornerstone of industrial demand. LONGi and Aiko Solar, two manufacturers representing a significant chunk of global solar capacity, are preparing to shift their production to copper-based contacts.
The Silver Institute projects solar demand for silver will contract by 19 percent in 2026, following an already weaker year. However, the Institute still expects overall industrial silver demand to expand through 2030, driven by electric vehicles and their charging networks, data centers, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
