Sindh Sugarcane and Wheat Growers Demand Support Prices Amid Rising Costs

Sugarcane and wheat growers in Sindh are facing a severe viability gap due to rising input costs and stagnant crop prices, according to the Sindh Abadgar Board (SAB).

The board has demanded support prices of Rs525 per 40kg for sugarcane and Rs4,500 per 40kg for wheat, saying that farmers have suffered losses running into thousands of billions of rupees over the past two-and-a-half years.

The SAB criticized the government's policy drift and poor agricultural planning, arguing that deregulating wheat and sugarcane markets without proper regulation has hurt growers.

Agricultural commodity prices have either declined or remained stagnant despite a period of inflation of around 29%, while farming input costs have continued to increase, widening the viability gap in agriculture.
