Singapore Condemns Attacks on Saudi Arabia Amid Escalating Tensions
Singapore has condemned recent attacks on Saudi Arabia by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid escalating tensions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson stated that it is crucial for navigational rights and freedoms to be respected according to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), ensuring the safety of seafarers and ships as per the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
The Houthis claimed responsibility for downing a Saudi drone over northwest Yemen, after attacking oil facilities in Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. A surface-to-air battery operated by Greek personnel in Saudi Arabia downed two ballistic missiles and a drone over Yanbu.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi offered to broker talks between the Houthis and Riyadh, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the conflict.
