SK Shipping to Dominate Asia's LNG Market After Landmark Asset Swap
South Korean shipping company SK Shipping is set to become Asia's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier operator after a major asset swap with H-Line Shipping. In the deal, SK Shipping will receive 16 LNG vessels and related long-term contracts from H-Line Shipping in exchange for 12 tankers, long-term contracts, and about $300 million in cash.
The transaction, announced by Hahn & Co., the private equity firm that controls both companies, aims to improve scale and operating efficiencies at SK Shipping. Following the deal, SK Shipping will operate a total of 32 LNG carriers and 14 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels.
H-Line Shipping, on the other hand, will focus on tanker and bulk shipping operations after the asset swap. Hahn & Co. plans to rebrand SK Shipping as K-LNG, positioning it to benefit from growing LNG demand.
