Slovakia Exceeds Gas Storage Target Amid Unfavorable Market Conditions
Slovakia's state-owned utility company SPP has achieved its initial natural gas storage target ahead of schedule, according to a recent announcement. The company confirmed that it holds 5.633 terawatt-hours (TWh) in underground facilities. This surpasses the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic's public interest mandate and exceeds typical winter operations.
The rapid stockpile comes at a time when broader European energy markets face unfavorable trading conditions, with summer natural gas prices exceeding winter futures prices. Despite market disincentives, SPP was mandated to build strategic reserves to prevent supply shortages.
SPP's CEO and Member of the Board of Directors, Martin Húska, stated that 'Security of natural gas supply is among our chief priorities.' The company aims to store 17.5 TWh of natural gas by the start of the 2026 winter season, covering 100% of the government mandate.
