Smith Dubs TC Energy a Monopoly in Natural Gas Debate
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has expressed doubts about launching a new Crown corporation to build out natural gas pipelines in the province. Speaking on her radio call-in program, she said it's 'unlikely' that such a move would be made, citing ongoing conversations with private sector companies.
The comments come after a leaked report recommended creating two Crown corporations to spur new natural gas transmission lines, which could cost between $53.9 million and $162.6 million. The report also suggested building a new major natural gas pipeline could have a price tag in the billions.
Smith's government has been working to attract AI data centres to Alberta, which require significant amounts of power to operate. However, the report noted that the province risks losing these projects if a quick solution for natural gas supply isn't secured.
The premier called Calgary-based TC Energy, which owns and operates much of Alberta's natural gas transmission infrastructure, a 'monopoly'. She said it's an 'active conversation' with TC Energy leadership and other private sector companies to find solutions to the issue.
