Smith Reiterates 'Hard No' on Using Alberta Oil in Trade Disputes

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has firmly stated that Canada should not interfere with Alberta's oil supply, particularly to the United States. In a meeting with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and other Canadian leaders, Smith emphasized that taxing or reducing oil exports would be detrimental to Canada as a whole.

'It's a hard No,' Smith said, reiterating her stance against using Alberta oil as leverage in trade disputes. 'You should never threaten something that's going to hurt you more than it's going to hurt them.'

Smith pointed out that the United States could retaliate by cutting off Canada's supply of oil and potash if Canadian leaders were to impose tariffs or restrictions on energy exports. She noted that this would have a disproportionate impact on provinces like Ontario and Quebec, which rely heavily on Alberta oil.

In contrast, NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi expressed support for using oil as leverage in trade negotiations. However, Smith dismissed his view as 'an emotional response not a practical policy.'
