Smith Warns Against Energy Gambit in Trade with Trump
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been under fire for over a year due to her stance on taxing Alberta oil heading to the United States. Despite the criticism, she remains steadfast in her position.
'I'm not going to fold,' Smith said during an interview.
Smith's comments come as some Canadians call for Canada to impose a 50% tariff on oil and gas leaving Alberta, with the goal of putting pressure on the US administration. However, Smith warned that such a move would have devastating consequences, including a counter-attack from the US.
'If we put a 50 per cent tariff on oil and gas leaving Alberta and the U.S. administration put a 50 per cent to 100 per cent tariff on oil and gas leaving the U.S. and going into Ontario and Quebec that would wipe out the Ontario and Quebec economies,' Smith explained.
Smith emphasized that Canada's energy relationship with the US is based on cooperation, not politics. She believes that playing the energy card would be counterproductive and would ultimately harm Canada's economy.
