Smith Warns Against Export Taxes Amid Ongoing Trade Disputes with US
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her opposition to export taxes and curtailment of Alberta's energy resources in response to the ongoing trade disputes with the United States. Speaking at a press conference in Grande Prairie on August 26, Smith described the tariffs issued by the US as 'tragic, unjustified, and wholly unnecessary'. She warned that taxing Alberta's oil exports to the US would have devastating effects on the Canadian economy.
Smith emphasized that such a decision would not only affect hundreds of thousands of Albertans but also impact other provinces in Canada. The Premier stated that if the US were to respond with a 50-100 per cent export tariff on oil and natural gas, it would be catastrophic for Canada's economy.
