Smith Warns of Canadian Vulnerabilities Amid US Tariffs
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith responded to the latest round of US tariffs in a press conference at Northwestern Polytechnic's Skilled Trades Centre in Grande Prairie. She emphasized that Canada lacks strategic oil reserves, which would allow it to supply Ontario and Quebec with essential fuels during times of crisis.
Smith stated that while American gasoline prices may increase due to the tariffs, they will still be able to maintain relatively manageable prices thanks to their own oil reserves. In contrast, Canada has no way to provide timely supplies to its eastern provinces without these reserves.
To mitigate the impacts of the tariffs on small businesses, Smith announced plans to launch an online portal for them to share feedback and concerns. She also established a cabinet committee co-chaired by her Finance Minister Jason Nixon and Jobs, Economy, Trade, and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow.
