Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been doubling down on her stance against playing the 'oil card' in negotiations with the United States, despite growing calls from some Canadians to use this strategy to pressure President Trump. According to Smith, such a move would have devastating consequences for both Canada and the US, including massive job losses and economic devastation.

'It would be devastating,' Smith said. 'If we put a 50 per cent tariff on oil and gas leaving Alberta and the U.S. administration put a 50 per cent to 100 per cent tariff on oil and gas leaving the U.S. and going into Ontario and Quebec, that would wipe out the Ontario and Quebec economies.'

Smith stressed that the energy relationship between Canada and the US is currently working well, but there are areas where the two countries do not see eye-to-eye. She urged Canadians to focus on resolving these differences through diplomacy rather than resorting to economic coercion.
