Sohi Lobbies for Federal Funds to Support OEG's Village at Ice District
Amarjeet Sohi, former Edmonton mayor and now lobbyist for Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG), is advocating for public funds to support the development of the Village at Ice District.
The project, which includes shops, restaurants, and housing, received $400 million in funding from the city, Alberta's government, and OEG itself in 2025. However, as part of the deal, OEG is seeking additional funding from federal sources to fulfill the housing component of the project.
A briefing document prepared for Canada's deputy minister of housing, infrastructure, and communities shows that OEG has met with representatives of the federal government to discuss potential funding for the Village at Ice District. The document notes interest in programs that support 'housing-enabling infrastructure' and downtown revitalization initiatives.
Sohi, who served as the federal housing and infrastructure minister during his time as the Liberal MP for Edmonton Mill Woods, has met with at least 18 government officials to discuss housing this year, mostly from the housing ministry and the Department of National Defence (DND).
