South Africa Faces September Fuel Price Hike Amid Global Tensions
South Africa is bracing for another fuel price hike in September due to ongoing global tensions and oil supply uncertainties. The Central Energy Fund (CEF) has released data showing an under-recovery across main fuel types, indicating estimated price increases of R1.07 for Petrol 95, R0.96 for Petrol 93, and R2.71 for Diesel.
The CEF's 'recovery' refers to the daily difference between South Africa's regulated fuel price and the actual cost of importing that fuel. This gap can lead to higher prices at the pump due to a combination of global oil market fluctuations and local taxes.
A number of locally listed companies, including Woolworths and MTN, have reported higher operating costs in their recent earnings reports, citing inflation, fuel prices, and interest rate hikes as key contributors. Angus LePine Williams, head of operations at Shiprazor, noted that e-commerce growth is being hindered by increased courier costs and failed deliveries.
