South Africa's Bumper Grain Harvest Could Bring Down Food Prices
The South African summer grain and oilseed harvest is looking robust, according to the latest crop estimates. The revised production figure stands at 21.5 million tonnes, an increase from previous expectations. Favourable weather conditions, specifically a La Niña event, have contributed to this boost in production.
The maize harvest is expected to reach a record high of 17.4 million tonnes, while soybean production is also poised to hit a new record. Economists believe that this massive harvest will lead to lower grain prices and continued support for reduced food inflation.
However, there are still risks associated with the upcoming El Niño weather pattern next season, as well as higher fuel and fertiliser costs linked to the Middle East war. These factors could potentially push food prices up in 2027.
