South Africa's Mining Sector in Focus as Earnings Season Heats Up

South Africa's mining sector will be in focus as Glencore and Anglo American release their quarterly earnings. Glencore is expected to report a significant increase in copper production, driven by improved grades and recoveries at its African operations and higher throughput at Antamina. Copper guidance remains unchanged, but investors are also looking for updates on the marketing division's performance.

Anglo American's first-half earnings should benefit from stronger realised copper prices, which increased 39% year-over-year. However, some pressure is expected from Kumba Iron Ore due to a sharp decline in first-half earnings and De Beers, whose underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) are expected to be negative.

Other South African companies releasing results include AngloGold Ashanti, Valterra Platinum, and Anheuser-Busch InBev. The group is expecting exceptionally strong earnings, supported by a sustained high gold price environment and record first-quarter cash generation. Meanwhile, the brewing company's interim results are expected to be driven by FIFA World Cup-related demand and premiumisation.

In other news, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) kept the repo rate unchanged at 7.00% at its latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, following a 25-basis point increase in May. The decision came as a surprise to both expectations and market consensus, but the MPC statement conveyed an important message: although the tightening cycle may have paused, the Bank remains focused on restoring inflation to its new 3% objective.
