South Africa's Richards Bay to Get New LNG Import Terminal
South Africa's energy landscape is set to change with the development of the ZET liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal project in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
The terminal will provide LNG receiving, storage, and regasification services for power generation and industrial customers. It will be developed in two phases, with Phase 1 including a floating storage unit with a capacity of at least 170,000 cubic meters and an onshore regasification system with an indicative capacity of three million tonnes per year.
The project is a joint venture between Vopak Terminal Durban and Transnet Pipelines, with international market interest signaled by ExxonMobil's recent heads of agreement to advance the project. Eskom has also signed a partnership with ZET, which will become a foundation customer of the terminal.
