South Carolina Growth Drives Duke Energy's Natural Gas Business Transformation
South Carolina's rapid growth has driven demand for energy infrastructure, according to Emily Henson, SVP and President of Natural Gas Business at Duke Energy Corporation. In an interview with Invest:, Henson highlighted the need for modernization in her company's natural gas business.
The past year has seen significant growth in South Carolina, particularly in the Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson areas, which make up Piedmont Natural Gas' service territory. Over five years, Duke Energy has added over 20,000 customers in this region, representing substantial growth compared to previous years.
As a result of this expansion, Henson emphasized the importance of planning for future energy needs. This involves engaging with local and state governments, industries moving into the area, and understanding customer requirements.
Piedmont Natural Gas is utilizing technology and modernization to strengthen reliability and infrastructure. The company uses data and forecasts to ensure adequate supply and build system infrastructure that meets growing demands. Henson stressed the significance of operational excellence and safety in her approach, stating, 'Our customers are a priority, but our foundation is that we have to operate safely and with excellence.'
Regarding affordability, Henson mentioned the role of data efficiencies and artificial intelligence in improving operations. She also highlighted the importance of avoiding dig-ins on gas infrastructure by utilizing the 811 system and maturing route optimization.
