South Korea Crude Imports Recover Amid Middle East Shipping Disruptions
South Korea's crude oil imports have shown significant recovery despite ongoing disruptions in Middle East shipping routes. According to data from the Korea Petroleum Association, July's crude imports reached 93.18 million barrels, a 9.8% increase from the same period last year. This marks a rapid rebound compared to April, when imports plummeted to 64.5 million barrels due to instability in maritime shipping caused by war.
The government has implemented various measures to ensure domestic supply stability, including the strategic reserve swap program and price stabilization measures through the Oil Price Cap System. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy froze the ninth-round oil price cap for a four-week period starting August 22 to address international oil prices, petroleum product prices, and household budgets.
South Korean refiners are also contributing to overseas supply by exporting petroleum products to countries such as Australia and New Zealand. However, the association warned that until global crude supply disruptions are resolved, they will focus on domestic price and supply stability while also helping to stabilize overseas petroleum product supply.
