South Korea's Crude Oil Imports Shift as US Crude Enters 20% Range

South Korea's crude oil imports have shown a significant shift in their sourcing channels. In the first half of this year, US crude oil accounted for over 20% of total crude imports, marking the first time it has entered the 20% range on a half-year basis. This represents a sharp 4-percentage-point jump from 16.5% a year earlier.

Saudi Arabian crude remained the top source at 30.5% of total imports, but its share fell by 2.6 percentage points from last year. The country's supply and export disruptions due to armed conflict in the Middle East have contributed to this decline. In contrast, US crude imports rose as a result of direct government intervention and emergency measures by refiners.

Industry observers caution that this diversification may be premature to characterize as a structural, private-sector-led change. They suggest it may be driven by short-term responses rather than long-term shifts in the market.
