South32 Stock Rises 7.4% on Copper Reserve Upgrade
South32's stock price rose by 7.4% after the company announced an upgrade to its copper reserves and a boost in dividend payments. The upgraded Ore Reserves and Mineral Resources at the Sierra Gorda mine led to a significant increase in the mine's copper inventory and planning horizon, extending its reserve life to 2045.
The Sierra Gorda reserve upgrade is a major development for South32, as it makes the mine more central to the company's future. However, this also reinforces the importance of managing capital demands on projects like Sierra Gorda and Hermosa, which could pressure cash flow if costs rise faster than expected.
South32's forecasts project $6.9 billion in revenue and $1.3 billion in earnings by 2029, with a fair value estimated at A$4.72. Some analysts were more cautious in their views, expecting lower revenue and earnings figures for the same period.
